Popular education centre in Caruaru, Brazil
The Assumption Centre for Popular Education (CEPA) is located in Caruaru, in the north-east of Brazil. It was legally founded on 13 May 2003 by the Little Sisters of the Assumption and lay friends who have committed themselves to working with us and living out the charism of the Congregation. The aim of CEPA is to welcome children and teenagers from various local neighbourhoods and their families in vulnerable situations.
In a welcoming environment, we help children and teenagers to develop holistically in the educational, artistic and social fields. We help them to grow and learn to live together in a spirit of community and building a culture of peace.
Some of CEPA’s values:
- solidarity,
- social justice
- listening,
- ecology,
- the joy of living together,
- openness to diversity,
- promoting autonomy,
- developing critical awareness,
- defence of human rights,
- attention to cultural roots,
- teamwork and networking,
- attention to relationships and conflicts.
At CEPA, children and teenagers can take part in various workshops: early childhood education, artistic and cultural expression (theatre, dance and capoeira), IT, audiovisual – new technologies as a tool for integrating children and teenagers from the periphery into social reality and fighting for their rights, etc.
We have a space where children and teenagers can play, learn and share in a collective spirit of solidarity.
CEPA supports children, teenagers and their families through educational, social, legal and psychological assistance, using an integral, conscious and participatory approach.
At CEPA, the Little Sisters of the Assumption work with paid lay people and volunteers; all are at the service of promoting life and guaranteeing the human rights of children, adolescents, young people and their families.
